Before you lace up your boots, the best hunters have already won the battle through proper scouting and map strategy. Your topographic map is not decoration—it’s your hunting blueprint.
Understanding Contour Lines
Contour lines on a topo map show elevation changes. Closely spaced lines indicate steep terrain; widely spaced lines indicate gentle slopes. This tells you where animals travel and where they rest.
Elk, mule deer, and other big game prefer:
- Ridge benches (gentle slopes just below ridgelines)
- Saddles between peaks (natural corridors)
- Drainages with water access
- South-facing slopes in cool months (warmth), north-facing in hot months (shade)
Identifying Key Terrain Features
Benches and Shelves Look for areas where contour lines flatten out on slopes. These benches are where animals bed during the day—they provide good vantage points for spotting danger.
Funnels and Corridors Identify terrain that naturally concentrates animal movement. A drainage system forcing animals through a narrow pass, or ridgelines creating natural trails—these are gold.
Water Features Streams, springs, and water holes are magnets. Animals must visit water, especially in dry seasons. Position yourself with water access upwind from these sources.
Escape Terrain Understand where animals will run if spooked. Thick timber on north slopes, rocky broken terrain, and dense cover—know these routes before you hunt.
Practical Map Reading
Get yourself a quality topographic map at your local outdoor retailer or online. Print it at a useful scale—large enough to see detail, small enough to carry.
Mark known features:
- Previous animal sightings
- Water sources
- Camping spots
- Known escape routes
Before your hunt, study the map at home. Visualize the terrain. Imagine yourself in that landscape. When you arrive in person, the terrain should feel familiar.
Data and Modern Tools
Modern hunters also use digital tools—Onyx Maps, CalTopo, or similar apps provide satellite imagery combined with topography. But don’t rely exclusively on digital tools. Learn to read paper maps. Your phone dies. Your map doesn’t.
The hunters who consistently find animals are those who invested time understanding their territory before stepping foot in it. Your map knowledge becomes field success.
